Comic Mom, Barred from Hollywood Comedy Club for Breastfeeding Her Infant, to Perform for La Leche League International Founders' Dinner
(PRWEB) October 11, 2006 -- In the midst of a government-funded Ad Council campaign that touts “Babies were born to be breastfed,” Tricia Shore was only trying to do what was best for her child when she placed the sleeping infant in a sling and strode into the Los Angeles club where she was booked to perform for a comedy showcase. The male employee guarding the door, however, allegedly asked a female employee to tell the club’s management that “a breastfeeding woman wants to perform." The management, via the female employee, relayed the message that Shore could not perform her showcase because the baby was with her. Shore had been scheduled to perform since before her then-three-month-old son was born. This information took Shore by surprise because she had been performing onstage with her son since he was one month old.
Rejected by the Hollywood comedy club, the Comic Mom was welcomed by La Leche League and other mom-friendly organizations. Promom.org started a boycott against the comedy club that barred her.
When La Leche League searched for someone to entertain at their International Founders' Dinner, they found a unique match in the Comic Mom. "I've performed for La Leche League conferences before," said Shore, "and they are truly my kinda folks! But to entertain the people who started the organization--awesome!" The Breastfeeding Comic Mom of three young sons will kick off the dinner celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of La Leche League International.
"I am honored that La Leche League wants me to perform at the Founders’ Dinner. What I love about performing for La Leche League is that no one there ever asks me what the comedy club's gatekeeper asked me the night that I was barred: 'What is the medical term for what you're doing with that baby?' I think everyone at the La Leche League Founders' Dinner will know that it's called breastfeeding."
Since 1956, La Leche League International, a non-profit organization, has provided education, information, support and encouragement to women who choose to breastfeed. Each month, accredited volunteer counselors assist over 300,000 mothers worldwide through meetings and telephone support. LLLI is recognized by the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics as expert in the field. For more information on attending the La Leche League Founders’ Dinner, please call Judy Torgus at 847-592-7555 or 847-519-7730 x 247.
In addition to performing comedy about breastfeeding and other momly stuff, Shore has recently written an essay in a book published by La Leche League, "Hirkani's Daughters: Women Who Scale Modern Mountains to Combine Breastfeeding and Working," edited by Jennifer Hicks. She is also editing a collection of funny breastfeeding essays from moms around the world called "The Breastfeeding Diaries," due to arrive in stores in November 2007.
